Hugh’s Honey Jive

9.7
Some people ingest chemicals to bring their mind to the places this track takes you

The hardest part of reviewing anything is avoiding clichés such as “eclectic” or “evocative”.  In the case of Hugh Doolan such adjectives are very easily overused because like all clichés they’re true.

Doolan is a composer based in Dublin, Ireland.   Like many from this cultural nexus he excels in marrying the innate musicality of Ireland  with sounds and textures from further afield to synthesise something that is eclectic and evocative.  Screw the thesaurus.  We could cover any of the stellar works in Hugh’s canon but time is limited and we recommend that once you digest this track that you check out some more of his oeuvre.

Baby Sleep Honey Jive starts with an arresting funky guitar riff decorated with psycho bells and a harmonica part from the Sesame Street score.   Percussion and the  low rumble of drum n bass support a vocal that lazily has you drift into a psychedelic blitz of sound.  Some people ingest chemicals to bring their mind to the places this track takes you!
